The golfing facility at Altadena consists of an eighteen hole, 6045 yard, par 71, challenging golf course sitting on approximately 118 acres of land bordering the Cahaba River. In April 1999 all 18 greens were rebuilt from the ground up with the new Tift Eagle Bermuda grass. In addition to the new greens, AVCC has undertaken a vigorous landscaping project throughout the course making it better and more beautiful than ever.

AVCC offers a full service golf pro-shop open Tuesday thru Sunday. The pro-shop offers such services as club storage, shoe cleaning, equipment repair and golf lessons.

  • Bunker Project under way - Message from the Pro:
I've been given the green light to let you all know about the "bunker project" that will be starting soon.  The plan is to renovate all of our bunkers by adding drainage, liners, and USGA Spec. sand.  The bunker by the practice green on the driving range has already been done.  Aesthetically, there is a noticable improvement and the drainage will save Mickey and his crew many man hours of having to pump the bunkers out every time it rains.  I've attached a photo of the practice bunker (taken today while it was snowing).

The project also includes adding the greenside bunkers back on holes #9, #12, and #17 that were taken out a couple of years ago.  They will have some slight changes to their design from what they were before.

Although renovating these bunkers will definitely improve their playability, it will not insure a perfect lie every time.  There will still be buried lies and thin areas that will continue to frustrate golfers.  One of the main reasons for getting a poor lie in a bunker is that the last person in it didn't take the time and care to properly repair the area they played from.  Please think about this the next time you are in a bunker.

I've attached a document that provides a detailed definition of a bunker and explains the complications of maintaining one and keeping it consistent.  The hope is that you will look at bunkers for what they are; a hazard, which in golf terms is suppose to penalize the golfer for a poor shot, sometimes severely.

We are always looking for ways to enhance the golfing experience here at Altadena and this is just one on a long list of projects that one by one we plan on completing using our capital reserve.

    Jeff

  • New Rules for Hole #13  - Effective immediately, for the tee shot only, any ball coming to rest left of the out of bounds line that runs between #13 and #14 is considered out of bounds.  The O.B. is detailed by a white line and white stakes.  It starts by the cart path next to #12 green and runs behind the #14 green to the dogleg of #13.  It then turns with the dogleg at the treeline and runs along the trees and beyond to the left of #13 green all the way to the cart path.  Again, this O.B. is only for any tee shot while playing #13, it does not apply for any shot from the fairway or while playing #14.
